Parent Visas

Australian Parent visas allow parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia, temporarily or permanently. These visas are intended for parents to reunite and live with their children in Australia.

There are many different parent visa pathways to consider depending on your individual situation.

General Eligibility Requirements

Sponsorship

A child must sponsor the parent, and the sponsor must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Balance Of Family Test

Generally, at least half of the parent's children must live in Australia, or more children live in Australia than in any other single country. (Except Subclass 870)

Health And Character

Applicants must meet Australia's health and character requirements.

Important Considerations

Cost

Parent visas can be expensive. Contributory visas involve significant additional fees.

Processing Time

Processing times vary greatly. Non-contributory visas (like subclass 103 and 804) have very long waiting periods. Contributory visas are comparatively processed faster.

Capping And Queueing

The number of parent visas granted each year is limited, which leads to lengthy processing times.

Parent Visa Sub-Class Range

Subclass 103

Parent Visa

This is a permanent visa that allows a parent to live in Australia indefinitely. It has a lower application cost but significantly longer processing times (often decades).

Subclass 143

Contributory Parent Visa

This is also a permanent visa, but it involves a higher application fee. In return, it is processed much faster than the Subclass 103 visa. This visa is a financial higher contribution to the Australian government.

Subclass 804 And 864

Aged Parent Visa

These are for parents old enough to receive the age pension in Australia. They have permanent residency. Aged Parent visas (subclass 804) have much longer processing times. Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864) has higher fees and faster processing.

Subclass 870

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa

This visa allows parents to stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years. It does not lead to permanent residency and has specific sponsorship requirements. This visa does not require the parent to meet the balance of family test.

Subclass 173

Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa

This is a temporary visa that allows a parent to stay in Australia for two years. It’s a pathway to the permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143), allowing the cost to be spread out.
